On Saturday, July 18, 2009, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the Florida Highway Patrol celebrated their anniversaries at the Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy cafeteria. The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles celebrated 40 years, and the Florida Highway Patrol celebrated 70 years of dedicated service to the citizens and visitors of the state of Florida.
Approximately 175 members, family, and friends enjoyed the event, which started with a welcoming, posting of the colors by Troop H Honor Guard, pledge of allegiance, and invocation. The attendees then enjoyed a great meal provided by the Florida Highway Patrol Advisory Council. After the meal, short speeches were given by Colonel John Czernis, Director, Florida Highway Patrol; Sandy Lambert, Director, Division of Driver Licenses; Stan Kirkland, Interim Chief of Staff, Division of Motor Vehicles; Major Steve Williams, Chief Technology Officer, Information Systems Administration; and Major Herb Sheheane, Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary. Following the speeches, the group enjoyed activities, such as volleyball, playing catch with a football, or just walking about the grounds of the FHP Training Academy. Static displays of the Florida Highway Patrol’s new Dodge Charger patrol car, Troop H’s Mobile Command Center bus, and the new Precision Immobilization Technique (P.I.T.) training vehicle were also available to be seen. The Florida Highway Patrol Museum was open, and retired Lt. Colonel Joe Henderson, the Florida Highway Patrol’s historian, was on hand to interpret the displays. The event was planned and organized by several dedicated members of the department from all divisions within DHSMV, including the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary.
